Week 6 - Communication and Promotion

Week 6 - Communication and Promotion

This week's lesson is one I learned the hard way: a well-attended art show hinges on effective promotion. It's not just about the number of attendees, but also the enthusiasm and engagement they bring. Positive feedback from students, parents, and administration ultimately tells the story of a successful event.

Actual work of my students in a local library.

My recent library showcase highlighted the importance of communication. Forgetting to mention the event to the students left them surprised, and likely reduced potential audience participation. This experience underscored the need for clear communication across all stakeholders.

Spreading the Word: A Multi-Channel Approach

So, how do I transform a quiet event into a vibrant celebration of student creativity? The answer lies in a multi-channel promotional strategy:

  • Fliers and Posters: Eye-catching fliers and posters displayed around the school are a classic approach. I loved The Art of Education University's idea of student-made publicity bracelets. This is a brilliant way to leverage student involvement and ensure the message reaches home. Canva is a great online tool for beginners to create professional-looking designs.

  • Social Media Power: It is obvious that in today's digital world, social media promotion is crucial. Encourage the school to share event details and student-created promotional videos on their platforms.

  • Student Involvement: Engaging students in the promotion process fosters a sense of ownership and excitement. Consider having them create posters or even short promotional videos.

  • Open the Doors: Think beyond the school community! Reach out to local media, community leaders, and even parents' workplaces to spread the word. The more people who know about the event, the more likely it is to be a success.

What do you know that you didn't know last week?
By implementing these promotional strategies, I can transform my art show from a quiet gathering to a bustling celebration of student talent. The more eyes on the artwork, the prouder the students will be, and the stronger the foundation is laid for future events.
